CHAPTER 11

Everyone dances with the Grim Reaper. I just didn’t think it would be me.

I listened to the ringing as I called Everly.

Her voice sounded weary when she answered. “Hello?”

“Did I wake you?” I questioned as I rummaged through the first aid kit for a bandage big enough to cover the little Z on my neck.

“No. I just had a long night.”

Wondering what she considered a long night, I ripped open the paper package and set the bandage and antibacterial wipe on the vanity. “Did you get the money?”

“Yes,” she said and I heard the suspicion in it. There was a pause. “How did you get my bank account number, Mara?”

Dammit, Zagan. “I promise to fill you in one day. It’s a long story.” I dabbed the wipe against my hairline and sucked in a breath at the pain. I inwardly cursed the demon again. “How long before I can come home?”

“I’m not sure. Maybe twenty-four hours if all goes well. This isn’t usual magic. Influencing supernatural creatures takes a lot of power and knowhow. I’m afraid it might be demon magic, but I won’t know for sure until I get in there and start working.”

“Are you sure?” Demon magic? Is that even a thing? Setting the phone on the counter, I turned the speakerphone on and worked on bandaging the sore wound blindly. Maybe I shouldn’t have broken the mirror.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“Everly, be careful. I’m not sure what will happen once you go to work.”

She snorted. “You don’t think I know that? I’m a master witch. I’ve worked on all matters of magical castings. I know the dangers.”

“Fine,” I said with a sigh. “I’m just anxious to come home. This place is too hot for my liking.”

“Where are you?” she asked, the sound of paper crinkling in the background.

“I’m guessing somewhere in Florida. There’s an old fort and palm trees. Char and Vex won’t tell me the exact location for safety reasons.”

The line was silent for a few beats before she said, “Don’t leave the safety of those two. I’m afraid there’s been some unfortunate events here lately.”

I frowned as dread pooled in my belly. “What’s going on?”

“Well, there’s been a slew of murders, rioting, and the news crew did a story on a horned man strolling through downtown.”

My stomach revolted and I wanted to vomit. I swallowed back bile. Lucifer was on Earth. The chaos was an attempt to bring me out of hiding. I curved my arms around my waist to curb the puke from rising. “You know those are all related, right?”

“I wasn’t born yesterday, Mara.” She let out a sigh. “Give me a call this time tomorrow and I’ll let you know if it’s safe to come home.”

The line disconnected and I pushed the phone aside. I stared at my pale reflection. With Lucifer running amok, I didn’t think it would ever be safe for me to come home. Now I had a demon brand on my neck. My life was a fucking disaster, but it was my life nonetheless.
